The World Is Coming To an End - Period.

The end of the skating season finally commenced today with preliminary rounds at Worlds. Hooray.

Personally, I'm truly happy that our friends get a chance to skate. I'm happy that Russia stepped up to make it happen. I'm happy that the Japanese Team will honor their country and do their part to help begin the process of emotionally rebuilding. Everyone needs heroes.

But most of all, I am ecstatic that a period is about to be placed at the end of this oh-so-long, clause and conjunction-ridden sentence that began in the fall of 2010.

Everyone is tired. Bloggers' paragraphs end in trailing participles. Interviews are taken from sound bites fraught with incomplete phrases. The last chapter should have been written nearly 8 weeks ago; instead, an epilogue of less than epic proportions is being tacked on to a cataclysmic novel that no one could have scripted, or even believed, back in October 2010.

Would I feel differently were our circumstances different? Of course. But no matter how I feel, it doesn't change the reality.

So, let's cheer on all the skaters competing in Moscow. Lets hope they skate their best performances of the season so we can close the books on Volume I of "Sochi: 2014" and move on to the outline of Volume II. Here's to the promise that comes with an exciting new prologue - and here's to hoping for a better scripted, and much more satisfying, denouement.

  1. This piece is so inspiring in so many ways, Allison. "Paying it forward" is a wonderful concept. Please allow me to chip in by reminding us all that "paying it backward" isn't such a bad thing either. It's never too late to forgive.
