Short Stop: Mean People Suck..

My daughter has a bumper sticker on her car that says, "Mean People Suck." I always thought that was a crude but somewhat accurate assessment. Now, I believe it is an absolute truism.
We knew that things would "heat up" coming into Olympics. On our son's Facebook fan page, however, it has become a veritable firestorm.

One thing I must say: All the skaters who earned their way to Vancouver did it with great talent, training, dedication and desire. When we say that we respect all of them for the fine efforts they have put forth, we truly mean it. What we don't understand is why, when we mean something we say, some people choose to simply be MEAN!!

I am confused.

We are not the only parents who have sacrificed. Our skater is not the only one who has worked hard, dedicated himself to his sport and who hopes to do his absolute best in Vancouver next week. That is what Olympic sport is all about. What I don't understand is the need of someone to post ugly, derogatory and totally inflammatory posts  when he or she knows it is 1) going to get buried on the page, or 2) get removed as lewd, litigious or libelous. What's the point?

With under 48 hours to go, we wish ALL athletes the absolute BEST. After all, that is what the Olympic ideal is all about, right?

  2. I don't understand those mean people, Allison. Your son's achievement is a testament to his hard work and dedication and your family's sacrifices.

I hope that the Games are a terrific experience for you all. Stay positive. Don't let the ice trolls get you down.

  3. Another great bumper sticker is "Wag More, Bark Less". I love this one! Sorry that there are those meanies out there, but I think that we nice ones still out number them. Have a wonderful time! Enjoy! Best wishes to J. Aloha, Sk8rmom

  4. Don't let the downers get you down! I don't know your son personally, but have spoken to him several times at his new rink. He gushes with genuine kindness to everyone and seems so humble. He is a wonderful role model for my young skater, and she has enjoyed the interactions she has had with him. We have become instant fans of his (that's how we found this website)! We hope that he (and all of you) have a wonderful Olympic experience. He deserves it and so does his family :) We are all cheering for him loudly in SE Michigan!

  5. The kids are looking forward to his SP on the 16th. As far as FB goes: it's like I teach them every day in Friendship Club: A+B=C. Your attitude plus your behavior equal your character. 'Nuff said!
Cheers, and we have our fingers crossed!
